Gun city barista Ian Callahan shares his top coffee in the CBD
GUN barista and entrepreneur Ian Callahan has been a key player in helping shape our city’s buzzing coffee culture.
Ian, 31, is the owner of Bar 9 at Parkside in the city and co-owner of the new Larry & Ladd in the Regent Arcade.
He’s the barista with the business brain and has also inspired a few of his peers in their own coffee ventures.
“Adelaide’s
coffee scene has gone in leaps and bounds and this was always our
mission from the start, to make the coffee scene here a lot stronger,”
he says.
City resident Ian spends his spare time mastering a
Brazilian martial art called capoeira and he’s just back from a food
trip to Barcelona and San Sebastian.
The Spanish pinxtos nibbles at Larry & Ladd are a “little nod” to his trip.
Ian says he often feels nostalgic about the original Bar 9 which opened in 2009.
“It
was a tin shed really with a coffee machine, a bar and three tables and
I opened it as a hangout for coffee nerds like myself,” he says.
“I
really want to go back to the roots of Bar 9 and eventually revisit the
idea of the original shop but using all the knowledge and resources
I’ve learned along the way.”

Market fave, The Market Shed on Holland (Sundays, 9am-3pm)
“I
head there pretty much every Sunday and Jono (Kaitatzis, the owner) has
done such a great job of creating a really friendly, welcoming vibe,”
Ian says.
“You walk in, and it doesn’t matter what you were feeling like before you arrived, you just get swept up in it all”.
Ian says he loves the tea from The Tea Catcher and the “absolutely incredible” Bull Creek pies.
